Review of the Karwinskia genus (Rhamnaceae) in mexico

A detailed taxonomic review of the genus Karwinskia Zucc. (Rhamnaceae) is presented, a group of shrubs native to the Americas with Mexico as its center of diversity. Despite their ecological and economic importance, Karwinskia species have received little attention in taxonomic studies. In Mexico, 11 species have been described: K. calderonii (orthographic correction of K. calderoni),, K. humboldtiana, K. johnstonii, K. latifolia, K. mollis, K. parvifolia, K. rzedowskii, K. subcordata, K. umbellata, K. tehuacana, and K. venturae, with K. humboldtiana being the most widely distributed. Species identification was based on a combination of morphological and ecological characteristics. This study includes a dichotomous key and updated descriptions of the species found in Mexico.
