Abstract

Athyrium palmense (Christ) Lellinger and
A. skinneri (Baker) Diels were studied in detail in an attempt to clear up long-standing
confusion in their taxonomic delimitation.
A study was undertaken of the external
morphology of the sporophyte, anatomy of
the rhizome and frond, and spore morphology of 60 specimens preserved in Mexican
herbaria. Because the characters purporting
to distinguish the two species were considered insufficient, A. palmense was placed
in synonymy under A. skinneri, the name
having priority.
