Abstract

  Perlilla or perlita, Symphoricarpos
microphyllus H.B.K., is a non-timber forest
resource that is distributed in the
Chichinautzin Biological Corridor, Morelos,
Mexico. Traditionally, peasant people use
this species as rustic brushes, but the
Distrito Federal Government has recently
increased the demand for carpet sweepers for city cleaning purposes. As a
consequence, the current source of the
species has been affected; over-utilization
and concomitant population decline
justify this study of its use, distribution,
abundance, and phenology. Such ecological
data also serve in developing a program that
will manage the resource and preserve the
species.
