Abstract

An updated geographic distribution for
Izziella orientalis along the Pacific coast
of Mexico is presented based on collections
conducted in February 1992 and November
2003 in several states. These included
Punta Conejo, BCS and various localities
in Sonora to Ixtapa, Guerrero. The
southernmost distribution of this species
is found in Ixtapa in Guerrero, extending
the previously known distributional range
of this taxon by 500 km. Although I.
orientalis is an extremely variable species,
it is easily recognized due to its external
habit and the presence of a dense cluster
of gonimoblastic filaments with small
carposporangia in the terminal end. In
addition, several sterile filaments that are
confined below the gonimoblast separate
it from Liagora’ species. Morphological and
reproductive descriptive data along with
detailed illustrations of this species is
provided.
