Abstract

The history of the Mexican national coat of
arms is linked to several legends, traditions,
and political issues. Over the years, different
plants have been used in its design. In this
study we have compiled information
regarding the plants that have been
included and inspired the national coat of
arms. The data is based on bibliographic
and museum research as well as the
examination of private coin collections, in
which various plants are depicted. The
information provided encompasses the
long and rich Mexican cultural history, from
the foundation of Tenochtitlan to the
colonial period and the independence of
Mexico to modern Mexico. Since its origin,
the evolution of the national emblem has
undergone various modifications. It was
until 1968 that the national coat of arms was
modified last and its design has remained
in its present form since.
