LA FAMILIA BOMBACACEAE EN LA CUENCA DEL RÍO BALSAS, MÉXICO
Abstract
In this paper we present a taxonomic revision of the family Bombacaceae for the Balsas River basin, Mexico. The study area
covers part of 8 states of our country
(Estado de Mexico, Guerrero, Jalisco,
Michoacan, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla and
Tlaxcala).
The present work includes descriptions and
dichotomous keys for the identification of
the genera and species which are distributed inside of this area.
This proyect was developed with the
study of more than 150 specimens of 7
herbariums of Mexico (ENCB, MEXU,
FCME, CHAP, INIF, HUMO & UAMIZ). For
each species the following information is
given: species description, synonymy, vernacular names if exist, geographical distribution, specimen citations by states,
elevational ranges, plant communities in
which it grows, flowering period, uses of
the plant if there are, and a distribution map.
Each species is illustrated, except Ceiba
acuminata.
In adittion to the bibliographic research, we
did 3 botanical collections; two of them were
realized in the Morelos state, at “Reserva El
Tezcal”, municipio de Jiutepec and Tlayecac,
municipio de Cuatla; and the last one was
realized in Huachinantla, municipio de
Jolalpan, state of Puebla.
For the study area we recognized the existence of 3 genera and 6 species of this botanical family (Bernoullia flammea, Ceiba
acuminata, C. aesculifolia, C. parvifolia,
C. pentandra y Pseudobombax ellipticum).
Bernoullia flammea and Ceiba acuminata
are reported for the first time from the study
area.
