Abstract

Licaria chinanteca, a small tree from the
Chinantla region, Oaxaca, Mexico, is
described and illustrated. This species is
distinguished by its tomentose branchlets,
tomentose lower leaf surfaces and
inflorescences, botryod inflorescences, and
the glabrous flowers with whorl I staminodes
present and whorl III glands absent. The
morphological survey of the Mesoamerican
species of Licaria suggests a close
relationship between L. chinanteca and L.
mexicana. The known distribution of L.
chinanteca points it out as an additional
endemic of the Chinantla region.
