Composition, structure, and status of the regeneration of an altitudinal gradient of tempered forest of Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua

Abstract

The objective of the study was to characterize the horizontal and vertical structure, to know the composition, richness, diversity, and state of natural regeneration of an altitudinal gradient (2200 m - 3200 m) of temperate forest in Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua, Mexico. 37 circular sampling sites of 1000 m2 distributed in six stands were established and within these two rectangular sites of 25 m2 were made for regeneration. The richness was estimated with the Margalef index (DMg), the diversity using the Shannon-Weiner index (H') and the true diversity index (D) and the similarity with the Jaccard similarity coefficient (SJ). The horizontal structure was evaluated by the Importance Value Index (IVI), the vertical structure with the Pretzsch Index (A) and regeneration according to density (N ha-1). 1,466 trees of 16 species, nine genera and six families were recorded; Pinaceae and Fagaceae the most representative. Floor 3 was more diverse (D) than its predecessors and a greater similarity in composition was found between floors 2 and 3. The IVI showed that on floor 1 the most typical species are Quercus sideroxyla (19.45 %) and Pinus engelmannii (13.18 %), on floors 2 and 3 were Pseudotsuga menziesii (28.95 % and 22.06 %) and Abies durangensis (27.20 % and 45.56 %). Floors 1 and 2 were dominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii, while floor 3 by Abies durangensis. The A index evidenced a decline in vertical structural diversity with increasing altitude. It was observed that most of the species had good regeneration on floor 1 (92.86 %), floor 2 (63.64 %) and floor 3 (66.67 %). Finally, the most influential factor in the establishment of regeneration was the opening of the canopy.
